This iconic fashion brand has been the lead sponsor of MoMA films since 2020. However, the association of MoMA and Chanel started back in 2011.

This year, Chanel is to maintain its support for MoMaA films with many fall-winter activities. 

The Contenders is a public screening series of the Museum of Modern Art. This series is sponsored by Chanel, and the series completes its 16th year this time.

The screening will have some of the most appreciated films of the year. However, this year, the screening of the movie is going to be different.

There will be a lot of interactions with the actors and crew members of the films after the screening.

Rajendra Roy, the chief curator of films at MoMA, says, 

“We have just launched MoMA’s The Contenders 2023 made possible by Chanel, which is our annual survey of the most exciting new films of the past year, which will now happily feature appearances by actors as well as writers, directors and other members of the crew.”

So, what are the films to be screened at MoMA public screening? The films to be screened are:

• Barbie – 30th November
• Poor Things – 5th December
• Nyad – 13th December
• Passages – 14th December
• Priscilla – 18th December

Post-screening, there will be interactions with cast and crew members of every film. The names to join these sessions are Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, Yorgos Lanthimos, Tony McNamara, Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, and Ira Sachs. 

There is another thing MoMA is coming up this year for the lovers of film music. Rajendra Roy says, 

“Beginning Dec. 1, fans of movie music can experience a retrospective of the work of one of the world’s greatest film composers — Ennio Morricone. The series will open with a new restoration of ‘Cinema Paradiso’ and include such classics as ‘Once Upon a Time in the West,’ ‘The Thing,’ and ‘The Untouchables.’”

Nevertheless, thanks to a 2016 document held by a notary in Milan, we now know who will inherit the company. The document reviewed by Reuters further highlights important issues related to the operations of the business, including securing jobs for the employees.

After him,

Armani’s sister, Rosanna, and three other family members are supposed to be the heirs to the company. Other heirs might include his long-term collaborator, Pantaleo Dell’Orco, and an NGO organization.

His sister does not work for the company. But his nieces Roberta and Silvanna and nephew Andrea Camerana work for Armani. Silvanna and Pantaleo Dell’Orco are further the “Style Lieutenants” of the company.

The document, born out of Armani’s adoption of bylaws in 2016, says that his heirs should go for a stock market listing for the company. He also mentions that this approach should only start at least five years after his passing and any M&A activities.

In addition, the bylaws also state how the style directors will be appointed, and he has a very definite take on the “look” of Armani products. His heirs should be committed to the.

“search for an essential, modern, elegant and unostentatious style with attention to detail and visibility.”

Overall, he leaves little room for confusion and contradictions in the matter of running the company in his absence.

The report from the Transformers Foundation is called  A Collective Approach: Rethinking Fashion’s Doomed Climate Strategy.

It shows how the fashion industry internally faces many problems to stay true to its climate initiatives. Further, the industry must go for collaborations if it wants to become successful in its pursuit of decarbonization.

To highlight the gaps and create a roadmap for the fashion industry to make its carbon initiatives fruitful, the Transformers Foundation conducted interviews with denim suppliers, producers, and other stakeholders of different nations that produce garments on a large scale.

These interviews have further provided necessary insights into sustainable practices within the fashion industry. It also highlights the need for re-evaluation to make the climate initiatives successful.

The Transformers Foundation has gotten in touch with twenty-seven people working for organizations or associations related to garments. Some of these major organizations or associations include Advance Denim, Artistic Milliners, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters (BGMEA). 

The Foundation has also talked to six individuals associated with educational institutions or NGOs related to the garment industry.

EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive and the New York Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act are some of the major developments in the regulatory field of sustainable fashion. Keeping their guidelines and pursuit in mind, the Transformers Foundation asks for a more equitable, feasible, and long-term effort to achieve decarbonization.

Transformers Foundation says that it agrees with the Paris Agreement and the collective objectives it had set. However, there is a need for evolution to ease the burden off the shoulders of the suppliers. The efforts should be equitable to achieve decarbonization.

The report again highlights the need for funding. Otherwise, the efforts of decarbonization can be in vein with the huge burden and a lack of financial feasibility on the part of suppliers.

Kim van der Weerd, the intelligence director of the Transformers Foundation, says, 

“This report articulates how and why the sector’s current approach to climate action makes it a supplier responsibility, rather than a collective responsibility. It also offers evidence for why this is not only inequitable but also impractical and doomed to fail. At the same time, by putting forward a definition of collective action, I hope this paper gives a framework for how we could accelerate action.”

Overall, the recommendations of the Transformers Foundation are:

• Shifting the mindset from I to We
• Centre equity
• Collective funding
• Considering potentiality and context
• Rapid expansions of potential through collaborations

The collection she presented at the Joburg Fashion Week on Thursday was an extension of her eclectic ideas and inspiration.

About the collection, Alia Bare says, 

“It is a very important collection for me because it represents what I am in terms of my culture, my background. I’m from Niger and I’m from different ethnic groups, and I wanted to show that in this collection.

Nowadays this is the most important thing. We are a melting pot. We are a different blend of things and this is what makes us unique and what we should embrace totally.”

The designer further added that she had faced a lot of political struggles in her country. However, these political conflicts do not project the ideal picture of her country.

Also, she went on to say that people across the world associate Niger with poverty, death, and frictions. These negative things perceived about the country damage its image to a great extent.

Bare said that most people see fashion as something “superficial.” However, it is possible to use fashion to express a country’s culture and heritage. She wanted to take that path to establish a positive image of her country.

The chosen and precious creations from the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art will be in full glory at the event. The collection is going to have a lot of dainty stuff.

So, in the true Sleeping Beauty way, these costumes will be kept inside glass boxes for display. Also, the Sleeping Beauties theme makes the anticipation high about the celebs turning up in fairytale gowns and exquisite outfits inspired by the popular fantasy character.

Curator Andrew Bolton has been the man behind the fashion brilliance and the creations to be displayed at the Met Gala. Bolton said that he was eager to infuse life into the massive 33000 pieces of the collection.

Many of these pieces have remained away from the public eye. However, he has picked 250 pieces from the collection, and these ones display fashion across four centuries.

On Wednesday, Bolton guided some journalists to the conservation lab into the bowel of the museum. He then expressed how he has been seeing fashion as a living art form. With the creations asleep in the conservation center, nothing could have been a more apt statement.

He further added that he aimed to present these pieces to the museumgoers in the most tangible way. He did not want the museum-goers to just see the pieces. He wanted them to know the pieces through smell and sound.

He said,

“When a costume comes into the Met collection it changes irrevocably. It can’t be worn, obviously, you don’t see it in movement, you can’t smell it, can’t hear it, can’t touch it.”

So, he focused on making the sensory aspects of the creation alive.

We can completely relate to his point. When someone walks down the gallery wearing perfume, it becomes the extension of fashion.

Similarly, you can hear fashion as an Alexander McQueen dress with stripped razor shells makes a rattling sound.

Some of the striking pieces in the collection include a bodice from the Elizabethan Era. It shows embroidery work inspired by nature.

Charles Frederick Worth’s gown will take us back to the 19th century, and it’s one of those pieces that cannot be displayed due to fragility.

There will also be a lot of mix and match with the incorporation of modern fashion elements into the “sleeping” pieces. The cutting-edge technology and inspiration like Hitchcock’s movies are going to render the collection “interesting.”

The exhibition will take place from 10th May to 2nd September 2024. Let’s see how the boundaries of fashion are pushed.

Nike has even left behind the most luxurious brands and mass markets in terms of Google searches and followers on social media.

Did you know that Nike had 305 million brand followers on Instagram, making it one of the topmost accounts on the IG platform?

On Tiktok, the brand enjoys a massive follower base of 4.8 million. Further, the Google search volume for the brand was 367 million (on average) for the brand.

With a consistent and massive investment in the sponsorship of sports and an association with the FIFA Women’s World Cup last year, Nike is only expected to grow as a valuable brand in the world.

The next brand in line is Zara. However, Nike beats it by a wide margin. The market value of Zara at present is £11.5 billion.

It managed to beat Nike in terms of Google search volume, though. This luxury fashion brand had a 386.5 million Google search volume last year.

On Instagram, Zara has 61 million followers, and on TikTok, it has garnered a follower base of 8.1 million. So, it is trailing behind Nike by quite a margin in terms of social media presence and follower base.

Still, the higher Google search volume has fetched it a brilliant brand score. It’s going strong globally with a brand score of 9.75.

The third brand in line is Louis Vuitton. It has a market value of £26.7 billion. However, it has a much lower Google search volume, recording 118 million Google searches last year.

Further, its Instagram follower base is 54 million, and on TikTok, it has 11 million followers, which is higher than Zara. The brand score of Louis Vuitton is 9.67.

With Adidas securing fourth place, other brands to feature on this list are Burberry, Dior, ASOS, Gucci, H&M, and Prada (in serial order).
